The Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 USM L is one of the mainstream pro-grade lenses in the Canon L Series lineup and is very popular among pro photographers (especially the press) and serious amateurs.
In fitting with the L series range that this zoom lens is a part of, the 24-70mm f2.8L USM is solidly built, resulting in it being dust and drip-proof. This sturdy construction does nothing to diminish its portability with this lens.
The optical construction comprises 16 elements in 13 groups, including one UD element and two aspherical elements. The elements are made of lead-free glass. The minimum focus distance is 0.39m, resulting in a maximum object magnification of approx ~1:3 at 70mm. The lens features eight circular aperture blades. The filter size is 77mm.
The lens has a ring-type USM drive based on a front-focusing system, resulting in an extremely fast AF speed. As usual, for modern ring-type USM lenses, full-time manual focusing is always possible in one-shot AF mode.
Compatible with full-frame and APS-C format Canon Digital SLR cameras, the 24-70mm features a silent and fast Ultrasonic motor, driving the autofocus along nicely for use in capturing both stills and video.
