The SEL300F28GM can capture decisive moments with breathtaking G Master resolution . An innovative optical design that includes three Super ED (Extra -low Dispersion) glass elements and one ED glass element effectively subdues axial chromatic aberration that is common in large-aperture telephoto lenses, as well as lateral chromatic aberration that can degrade resolution toward the image periphery. Outstanding resolution and contrast are maintain ed right out to the image edges, which also allows for more flexible cropping and editing. Optional 1.4x (SEL144TC) and 2.0x (SEL20TC) teleconverters provide even greater versatility. Two XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors with high thrust efficiency and an advanced control algorithm have been specially fine tuned for use in the SEL300F28GM, achieving extremely fast response to control signals so that the large-diameter focus element group is precisely controlled with minimal time lag and vibration. The result is exceptionally responsive, precise, quiet, low-vibration AF operation.
High-speed continuous shooting with fast, precise AF/AE
AF tracking speed and precision are maintained even when shooting continuous bursts at a small F22 aperture. The user can shoot continuously while panning to follow moving subjects, or stop down to achieve greater depth of field without having to worry about minimum aperture limitations.
High AF tracking performance with 1.4x and 2,0x teleconverters
Fast, precise AF performance is available even when the SEL300F28GM is used with the optional SEL14TC (1.4x) or SEL20TC (2.0x ) teleconverter.

The number of elements positioned at the front of the lens has been reduced to lower subjective weight, with Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements employed to maximize optical performance. Internal components made of a durable magnesium alloy further contribute to overall weight reduction. All of this significantly reduces weight and inertia for easier shooting and transportation. Responding to feedback from professional photographers, the lens has been designed so that its weight is not concentrated at the front. This optimizes balances and reduces moment of inertia which is felt as resistance to rotation, allowing precise, agile lens movement and panning while shooting.
Built-in Optical SteadyShot
Built-in optical image stabilization makes it easier to shoot sharp images handheld at telephoto focal lengths. MODE 2 offers id eal stabilization for panned shots, while MODE 3 provides enhanced viewfinder stabilization that allows easier framing of dynamic sports or other active subjects. 5-axis stabilization is available with compatible α bodies. Compatible bodies also provide detailed body-lens communication and control that can effectively manage the blur that tends to occur at telephoto focal lengths for more stable framing. Body-lens communication also supports Active Mode when shooting movies.
Full-time DM
When the Full-time DMF switch is ON, manual focus is automatically engaged when the focus ring is operated, even in the AF-C mode. This capability can be used to correct focus when autofocus targets the wrong subject, for example. Full-time DMF is not restricted by focus range limiter switch settings.
Linear Response MF
Linear Response MF ensures that the focus ring responds directly and linearly to subtle control when focusing manually. Focus ring rotation translates directly to a corresponding change in focus, so control feels immediate and precise.
Four customizable focus hold buttons
Customizable focus hold buttons are provided in four locations for easy, instant access when shooting in any orientation. Other functions can be assigned to the focus hold buttons from the body menus as required. “Tracking On” switching could be assigned to the focus hold buttons for fast changes, for example.
Function Ring
The SEL300F28GM includes a function ring that can directly control the power focus, APS-C/full-frame switching functions of compatible bodies. Power Focus: This is the default setting. Rotating the ring initiates constant speed focusing in the specified direction. APS-C/Full Frame: When assigned to the corresponding body menu function, rotating the ring instantly selects APS-C or full-frameformat.
Focus Range Limiter
A focus range limiter switch makes it possible to limit the lens's autofocus range to 6 meters to infinity, or allow full range autofocus with no limit. This can speed up focus in some situations.
Dust and moisture resistance plus high durability
A dust and moisture resistant design provides extra reliability for outdoor use in challenging conditions. The use of a durable magnesium alloy for internal components and other refinements maximizes durability while reducing weight.
Fluorine front element coating
The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels fingerprints, dust, water, oil, and other contaminants, while making it easier to wipe off any contaminants that do become attached to the lens surface.
Drop-in filter support
The SEL300F28GM can use standard 40.5 mm diameter drop-in ND and other filters as well as Sony's own VF-DCPL1 circular polarizer. The VF-DCPL1 can be easily rotated while installed in the lens.
Removable tripod mount foot
The supplied aluminum tripod mount foot can be positioned as desired after loosening its clamp knob. The sliding tripod mount foot can be removed from the tripod ring so that it doesn't get in the way when shooting handheld or storing the lens in a camera bag.
Lock-button type lens hood
A new lens hood design uses a high-strength engineering plastic that provides an ideal blend of durability and low weight. The interior of the hood features flocking to minimize reflections, and the hood attaches to the lens via lock-button mechanism rather than screw threads for easier attachment and removal.
